Directions

How to get there:

By air:
FlyBalaton airport, at the southwestern end of the lake at Sármellék, receives fl ights from Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt from April. See www.flybalaton.com.

By car:
From Budapest, just remember the lucky number 7. Take the M7 motorway out of the city, then route 7 along the lakeshore.

By train: MÁV trains leave regularly from Déli or Keleti stations in Budapest to various destinations around the lake. See www.mav-start.hu for schedules and prices.

Once you’re there:

Ferry: Car ferries run between Szántód and Tihany, at the narrowest part of the lake, a 10-minute trip with a gorgeous panorama. See www.balatonihajozas.hu for details.

Boat transport and tours: Passenger boats tour the lake with the following routes: 1. Siófok-Balatonfüred-Tihany-Tihanyrév- Balatonföldvár 2. Fonyód-Badacsony.
You can also rent large boats or go on a “disco” or children’s cruise. Check out www.balatonihajozas.hu for schedule and prices.

Buses: Buses run from town to town along the lakeshore on routes 71 and 7 that circle the lake. Buy a ticket (cash only!) from the driver for the desired distance.
